You can claim a tax deduction for the shipping costs of any gift in-kind donations you send to us.

Tips on How to Value Gift In-Kind (GIK) Donations

In-kind donations are non-cash donations.  These include things such as diabetes supplies, insulin pumps, quilts, office supplies, and professional services, etc.  We could not operate without the generous donations of in-kind items -- especially of diabetes supplies!

Information From the IRS About Valuing Donated Gifts In-Kind

The IRS has information about how to safely choose a charity as well as how to place a value on the gift-in-kind donation you make.

Sources to Help You Place a Value on Donated Insulin Pumps

If you are claiming a value of $5,000 or greater for any single item donation, the IRS requires you to have an independent appraisal done. Here is a list of some of the major insulin pump manufacturers in the United States:

Animas

Animas pump models older than the IR 1250 have no value, because the company will not repair, support, or replace older model pumps.

Deltec

We are not accepting any more Deltec insulin pumps (read why on our blog.) Smith's Medical, the makers of Deltec Cozmo and Cozmore Systems insulin pumps filed for bankruptcy in 2008. As of 2009, they will not repair, recertify of replace pumps for us. Please do not send us Delec pumps. Once they change ownership, the warranty is voided and the pump cannot be used by another person. The following information is for donors who donated these pumps before they became obsolete.

Disetronic

These pumps are no longer available in the United States and have no value.

H-Tron, D-Tron, Accu-Chek Spirit

Medtronic

We are no longer accepting Medtronic MiniMed and Paradigm Insulin Pumps. Please read our blog announcement if you have questions about Medtronic pump donations.

If you send one to us, we will not be able to provide you with a tax receipt for your donation, and we cannot return it to you unless you pay for return shipping. We suggest you contact Medtronic and ask about other options for donating your used Medtronic insulin pumps.
